Big crowd turns out for Franklin Park rededication
A beautiful day — plus free frisbees and concert by “Funky Mama” Krista Eyler — helped draw a crowd of nearly 200 Prairie Village residents and city officials Saturday for the re-dedication of Franklin Park.
The park underwent an approximately $1 million renovation starting last summer that included the construction of permanent restrooms, a picnic shelter, and a new natural play area with a stream.
City Councilwoman Diana Ewy Sharp, who chairs the city’s Parks and Recreation committee, thanked the residents and city staff who helped conceive the project as part of the parks master plan, an initiative that kicked off in 2008.
Several residents who live in the neighborhoods surrounding the park said they were pleased with the results of the project.
“We missed it last summer,” said Matt Adamson, who lives just a few block away, as he and son Ryan played near the jungle gym. “It looks great.”
The city’s next major project under the parks master plan will be the renovation of Weltner Park starting later this year.
