For local trails, 8 may be more than enough, says councilwoman
In a few short months, the stroll along Somerset Drive from Franklin Park to Corinth Square is going to be much more pleasant for pedestrians.
But a member of the city’s parks committee thinks the eight-foot-wide trail being built there might be just a bit too spacious — especially for other parts of the city.City Councilwoman Laura Wassmer said she and the parks committee would be looking into changing the language in the Parks Master Plan that calls for the construction of eight-foot trails throughout the city.
“Eight feet is going to be the right size for some of these trails, but there may be other parts where it would just be too big,” Wassmer said. “It’s one of those things where, when you actually see how wide it is, you realize, ‘That’s really big.’”
The city has received a letter of complaint from one of the homeowners who live along the stretch of Somerset where the new path is being built.
“I truly think when the trail opens and people start using it, they’ll love it,” Wassmer said. “But change is hard.”
