Two SM East students charged in connection with killing of 16 year old
The Wyandotte County District Attorney’s office announced in a press release this afternoon that it has filed charges against two SM East students, Stephen A. Reed and Shane Reed, in connection with Sunday’s killing of Ryder Spillman:
Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome A. Gorman today charged two juveniles in connection with the April 23, 2011, shooting death of Ryder Spillman, which occurred at T.A. Edison Elementary School, located in the 1100 block of Locust in Kansas City, Kansas.
Stephen A. Reed, White Male, Prairie Village, Kansas, DOB: 08-06-94, a student at Shawnee Mission East High School, was charged with First Degree Murder and Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile.
Shane Reed, white Male, Prairie Village, Kansas, DOB: 10-07-93, also a Shawnee Mission East student, was charged with Aiding a Felon and Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile.
The two juveniles charged are cousins.
Both were charged as juveniles in Wyandotte County District Court. Detention hearings for both individuals were held this afternoon. A Wyandotte County District Judge ordered both of them detained pending status hearings. The next hearing for Stephen Reed is set for May 16, 2011, at 1:15 p.m. in division 15 of the district court.
The next hearing for Shane Reed is set for May 20, 2011, at 1:15 p.m. in division 15 of the district court.
The District Attorney’s Office filed motions in conjunction with the charges requesting the court to allow both juveniles to be tried as adults.
Both of the individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
