Around town: Jazzree at US Bank

Tweet Fundraising efforts for the second annual Prairie Village Jazz Festival officially got under way last night with Jazzree, a silent auction and music event at the US Bank branch at the Village Shops. Patrons bid on 18 silent auction items, and enjoyed wine and appetizers.

Tweet The weather has certainly taken a turn for the better, meaning fallow landscaping is quickly springing back to life. If you’re looking for options to augment what you’ve already got going on in your lawn — or maybe some greenery to spruce up the house — two local schools should be able to help today. [...]

Tweet In a few short months, the stroll along Somerset Drive from Franklin Park to Corinth Square is going to be much more pleasant for pedestrians. But a member of the city’s parks committee thinks the eight-foot-wide trail being built there might be just a bit too spacious — especially for other parts of the city. [...]

Tweet I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem, but I’ve been a complete sucker for the giant packs of strawberries that have been on sale at the Hen House: $4.98 for 3 lbs of luscious berry goodness seems like too good of a deal to pass up. Then I bring them home [...]

Tweet Looking for slightly stained baby items? Maybe a collection of National Geographic magazines from the 1980s? How about a super hi-fi cassette player? There’s a good chance you’ll find all that and more this weekend around Corinth Hills. The Corinth Hills Homes Association has organized its annual garage sale weekend, when several local homeowners [...]

The silent auction will feature: A Prairie [...]

Tweet Blizzard jogger, you’ve got company. Last Monday Mission resident Kelly Morken crossed the finish line of her first Boston Marathon. Three days later, she got her final round of chemotherapy. You read that right: Morken was in the middle of chemo treatments. And training for one of the most competitive endurance races in the [...]

Tweet In an interview with KCTV 5′s Eric Chaloux Wednesday, the mother of the former SM East student charged with first degree murder in the death of SM North student Ryder Spillman said her son told her the incident was an accident. Theresa Reed, mother of Stephen Reed, told Chaloux that Stephen says he shot [...]

Tweet Lutheran Church of the Resurrection Pastor Alix Pridgen’s congregation had a vision for the future. Trouble was, Pridgen was having a hard time seeing how they could get there. She had worked with lay leaders and members for two years on a plan for keeping the church relevant in the 21st Century. During that [...]

Tweet Yesterday saw the second ribbon cutting in as many months for a pediatric care office in Prairie Village. Village Pediatrics, a practice with seven practitioners, opened up in the Corinth Office Center, 8430 Mission Road, earlier this month, moving from its previous location in the Mission Bank building. The University of Kansas Physicians opened [...]

Tweet In light of the news that two SM East students were being charged in connection with the murder of a 16-year-old SM North student in Kansas City, Kan., Prairie Village Police Chief Wes Jordan said his department would be increasing its surveillance of the local skateboarding park and its presence at the school. In [...]

Tweet The Wyandotte County District Attorney’s office announced in a press release this afternoon that it has filed charges against two SM East students, Stephen A. Reed and Shane Reed, in connection with Sunday’s killing of Ryder Spillman: Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome A. Gorman today charged two juveniles in connection with the April 23, [...]

Tweet SM East associate principal Steven Loe sent an email to parents and students at the school Monday informing them that a suspect in a weekend murder is associated with the school. Ryder S. Spillman, a 16-year-old SM North student, was found dead in Kansas City, Kan. Sunday near Thomas A. Edison Elementary school, according [...]

Byer is also assistant director of the Honors Program. The award is one of two top faculty honors given by the college each year. It is [...]

Tweet Prairie Village residents: time to keep an eye out for your neighbors. Police logged a total of five residential burglaries the morning of Saturday, April 23. A sixth burglary was attempted in the 7000 block of Cedar Street. See the map below for a look at where the burglaries occurred: View April 23 burglaries [...]

Tweet Buena Vista street resident Christy Hogerty is hoping local residents can help bring her family’s cat Eleanor back home. Mostly an “outdoor cat,” Eleanor usually roamed around the neighborhood during the day but would return home at night and sleep with Hogerty’s children. But the family hasn’t seen Eleanor since Thursday. “She always pulls [...]

Tweet Between the egg hunt, rubber ducky rivier, Easter bunny and miniature train, it’s probably safe to say there was plenty to keep families entertained at this year’s Prairie Baptist Eggstravaganza. The annual event is held at Porter Park the Saturday before Easter. More photos after the jump.

Tweet Meredith Adkins (née Fuller), a 1980 SM East graduate who used to work at the Prairie Village pool, is getting her turn in the limelight as part of a new reality show. The new show, “Sinbad: It’s just family,” follows the life of Adkins’ husband, the comedian Sinbad, Adkins, and their children. Adkins and [...]

Tweet Do you have an Earth Day news hangover? Well, here’s a little hair of the dog: We’re some of the most environmentally conscious people in the entire Kansas City metro area. And we also like to drink. The Ripple Glass recycling bin at Corinth Square is currently the most popular site in the area, [...]

Tweet A miraculous thing happens in the springtime — one that I wait for all year. No, I’m not talking about the theme of a certain Mel Gibson movie. I’m talking about buying artichokes for 99 cents, as they were this week at Hen House. Now, usually I just view the artichoke as the ideal [...]

Tweet First of all, thanks to the many of you who offered constructive input after we announced we’d be rolling out changes to our commenting system. After a couple weeks of deliberation, we’ve decided that we’ll be switching over to Facebook’s commenting platform in mid-May. We’ll also be unveiling a detailed forum policy before the [...]

Tweet Listen: I know you want to get rid of the sofa you got from your grandmother’s basement. It’s been sitting in your garage for, like, three years now. And the vinyl cover is started to grow mold or something on it. But, you’re going to have to wait just a little bit longer, okay? [...]

Tweet Members of the SM East Chansonettes — a choir made up primarily of sophomore girls — made their annual Day Tour yesterday, performing at three healthcare facilities and the Power & Light District. Their first stop was The University of Kansas Cancer Center in Westwood, where they sang for staff and patients. See the video [...]

Tweet There has been plenty of praise, and a little ribbing, for some local businesses in the media this week.
