Lancers fall to Rockhurst, losing streak continues
The Lancers put up an impressive fourth quarter comeback at Rockhurst Friday night, cutting a nine-point deficit to two with just 1:45 left on the clock.
But even a half court three-point swoosh from sophomore Vance Wentz as time expired couldn’t get them over the hump. Rockhurst held on for a 42-41 victory, prompting its fans to break into a rowdy cheer of “This is our house!”
Wentz and fellow sophomore Chase Hanna sparked the Lancers’ fourth quarter drive. Hanna hit a three with 3:06 remaining, bringing the Lancers to within five points. On Rockhurst’s ensuing possession, Hanna levied a hard foul on a Rockhurst player as he drove to the hoop, prompting an intentional foul call from the officials. But some extracurricular activity from Rockhurst after the play brought them a technical foul at the same time.
The Lancers trailed by three after the free throws, and layup from Wentz brought the score to 38-40. Sloppy play on both sides of the ball kept the last minute exciting — but ultimately Rockhurst was able to control the clock, and hold on for the win.
After winning their first four games of the season, the Lancers have now lost nine in a row.
