Tweet Lancers boys basketball coach Shawn Hair has released the JV and varsity roster for the 2010-2011 season. It’s a relatively young team, with four seniors among the eleven JV/varsity players. Two of the team’s tallest three players, 6’5″ Zach Schneider and 6’4″ Billy Sutherland, are sophomores. See the full roster after the jump.
Tweet Lancer hoops fans got a sneak peak at this year’s teams last night during the annual Black & Blue scrimmages. The girls and boys freshman and sophomore teams got the evening started at 5 p.m., followed by the JV and varsity squads from the girls at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:15 p.m. [...]
Tweet SM East football coach Chip Sherman just led the Lancers to the best season in school history — and today he and the team will get a very special recognition as a result. The Kansas City Chiefs announced last week that Sherman had been named Chiefs High School Coach of the Year. Kearney High [...]
Tweet Crews have just about topped off the cell phone tower the city council approved this summer. We’re interested in what area residents think about its impact on the landscape:
Tweet If you weren’t one of those eager beavers who headed out to get a Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving, don’t worry: there’s still plenty of time to deck your halls. We swung by a few local Christmas tree lots to find out how much they cost, what kinds they offer, and where their [...]
Tweet So Prairie Village toddler Sam Komenda might not be the most beautiful baby in the country. But being in the top sixty isn’t bad… LIVE! with Regis and Kelly recently held a nationwide Beautiful Baby contest in conjunction with Parenting magazine, and the December/January issue features the winner, Maggie Sue Romeo of Braselton, Ga., [...]
Tweet Thanksgiving is behind us, which means the Christmas season is officially open. What are you all most looking forward to about the holidays around Prairie Village?
Tweet My favorite part of Thanksgiving has always been the day after. I love nothing more than a fridge full of leftovers. I like the standard turkey sandwich and the generic Thanksgiving mish-mash, but I’ve added a few new standards over the years. Mashed potato pancakes are a great savory breakfast item and require nothing [...]
Tweet The suspects arrested Tuesday when a Prairie Village resident called police after seeing three men leaving a residence near 76th Street and State Line Road have been booked at Johnson County’s New Century Detention Center, 27745 W. 159th Street. The detention center is in Gardner. The men, James M. Jackson, 24; Leanthony D. Mullins, [...]
Tweet Just a couple of thoughts on places to go and people to see over the long holiday weekend: Feel like you could use a little fresh air and exercise to compensate for the two cups of gravy you consumed at Thanksgiving dinner? The annual Luminary Walk at the Overland Park Arboretum, 8909 West 179th [...]
Tweet We swung by Falmouth Street after Thanksgiving dinner around 7:30 p.m. to see how the debut of Mike Babick’s annual Christmas display was going, and while traffic was slow when we arrived, by the time we left half an hour later the yard was packed. Check out the sites and reactions to the display:
Tweet Happy Thanksgiving, PVPost.com readers. What with it being a time of thoughtful reflection and all, we won’t be posting much today. But we did want to share three things we’re thankful for about living in Prairie Village: 1.) Phenomenal public schools. And involved parents willing to fight for them. It says a lot about an [...]
Tweet A contingent of SM South parents lobbying the board of education to approve the original proposals put forth by superintendent Gene Johnson got the attention of the leaders of the Save Mission Valley group on Monday. After attending Monday’s board of education meeting, Save Mission Valley committee members Michelle Trouvé and Mary Lee Duff [...]
Tweet Something about that sign seems two-thirds familiar… Currie Myers, a former Johnson County sheriff who now runs a conservative Web site called The Shawnee Mission Times, had printed off a slew of yard signs protesting the city of Mission’s recently passed Transportation Utility Fee. Commonly referred to as the Driveway Tax, the controversial initiative [...]
Tweet We caught up with Mike Babick Tuesday evening as he was nearing the end of a month-long marathon of wiring and construction for his annual holiday lighting display. Here’s what he had to say: Babick also said he thought the Prairie Village police had done a good job working with his Falmouth Street neighbors [...]
Tweet It’s been a busy day for police. Several squad cars just left the intersection of 75th Street and Roe Avenue. The police dispatcher said the cars were responding to “suspicious activity,” but not to a reported burglary or any other crime. We saw one car turn down 74th Street and then into Brush Creek, [...]
Tweet The Prairie Village police department has put out a press release on this morning’s thwarted burglary. (KCTV 5 has a good description of the events with some additional information here). Captain Tim Schwartzkopf of the Prairie Village police said in an email that the department couldn’t confirm at this time that the suspects arrested [...]
Tweet Details are still coming in, but Prairie Village city officials have confirmed that a burglary in progress was stopped this morning. Three suspects were apprehended in the neighborhood near Indian Hills Middle School after a vehicle and foot chase. The area was swarming with law enforcement activity including officers from six agencies. A Kansas [...]
Tweet We’ve had a couple of readers inquire about some anti-police graffiti that’s popped up near Somerset Drive and Mission Road. Someone has defaced the Do Not Enter sign at the south end of the Mission Valley driveway: The same person or people, ostensibly, has/have spraypainted something unprintable here on the sidewalk along Somerset Drive [...]
Tweet SM East first-year athletic director Jeremy Higgins got the winter sports season off to an official start Monday with “Meet the Coaches” night. Before parents and students participating in boys and girls basketball, boys swimming, and wrestling met with the coaches, Higgins let them know about a set of policies that would be in [...]
Tweet Everyone else is taking care of the cooking this year, but we’ve been charged with picking up wine for Thursday’s Thanksgiving feast. And, truth be told, my wine wisdom is pretty limited. So I was happy to run in to Chris Mandigo during a scouting mission at Rimann’s the other day. Mandigo is a [...]
Tweet SM East journalism adviser Dow Tate may not have won Kansas Teacher of Year honors this weekend — but if there were any doubt he deserved to be on the finalists list, the school’s performance at a recent national journalism convention should take care of them. At the JEA/NSPA Fall Convention earlier this month, [...]
Tweet Members of several local churches and two synagogues came together at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 West 75th St., Sunday afternoon for the annual ecumenical Thanksgiving service. Participating congregations included Prairie Baptist Church Congregation Ohev Shalom, Cherokee Christian Church, Village Presbyterian Church, Colonial United Church of Christ, Southminster Presbyterian Church, Congregation Kol Ami, and [...]
Tweet Oh, not on the new asphalt… A portable toilet that had been set up at Franklin Park while construction crews finish up extensive renovations was found flipped on its side Sunday. The good news is that the toilet appears to have been relatively un-full when it fell, though a chemical agent spilled out onto [...]
Tweet The in-laws are coming. You’re supposed to be cooking. And all of the holiday office treats and parties have you feeling like you’ve eaten enough for three. For me, at least, there are always a few days around Thanksgiving and Christmas when I feel like I really need to blow off some nervous energy [...]
